In the aftermath of a divorce or relationship breakup our bodies feel the toll of our stress and anxiety and the sleepless nights. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to move your body everyday.
Just eighteen months ago I started going to the gym for strength and movement training. Almost immediately I noticed positive changes in my physical, emotional and mental health. One of the unexpected changes was that as my physical strength grew, so did my self-confidence.
When you are in the throes of a divorce or breakup, it is vital to move your body everyday. Moving your body makes you stronger physically, emotionally and mentally.
LEARN SOME EASY WAYS TO MOVE YOUR BODY:
Walking is easy to do.
The easiest form of exercise is to put on a pair of comfortable shoes and go for a walk. You can walk in your neighbourhood or choose somewhere new to explore. Usually you will see something new to pique your interest and allow your mind to wander away from worrisome thoughts.
Dancing is great fun.
Whether you dance alone to your favourite music at home or go out to any of the myriad of dance classes and venues, dancing is great for your mind and body. More structured dancing requires both mental and physical skills. In addition to balancing, strength and endurance, dancing requires cognitive ability: the concentration to remember steps and to move with the music and one's partner. Dancing, especially with other people, also activates your happy chemicals; dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins.
Hire a personal trainer.
If you can afford it, hiring a personal trainer will reap rewards. Whenever you invest in something, you are more committed. A personal trainer has the expertise to train you to work all the muscle groups and you tend to push yourself harder in the presence of a personal trainer. Also, you are less likely to suffer an injury from exercising when there is a personal trainer overseeing what you do.
Gardening
Gardening requires a range of movement; walking, squatting, bending, pushing and pulling. An added bonus is that you are in the fresh air, being nurtured by nature, which provides many mental health benefits.
Tone while grocery shopping.
When convenient, instead of using a trolley, use a shopping basket. By carrying a basket you will be performing a weight bearing exercise for your arms while you are strolling around the supermarket. You will also be increasing your strength and burning more calories. If the shops are within walking distance of your home, try walking a few times and carrying your groceries.
HERE ARE SOME REASONS TO MOVE YOUR BODY EVERYDAY:
1. Enhanced mood
Endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones are released when you exercise.
2. Healthier lymph system.
The lymphatic system requires your motion to circulate lymph fluid throughout the body.
3. Increased bone mass.
Exercise builds and preserves bone mass, especially if you include weight training.
4. Enhanced brain health.
Exercise improves cognitive performance for people of all ages.
5. Better sleep.
Many people experience better sleep when they begin an exercise regime.
Wherever you are in your divorce or breakup journey, find a way to move your body everyday. You will feel the benefits and your body will thank you with added vitality and strength. You may even begin to establish some life-long habits that you enjoy!
